Before you start sewing your custom steering wheel cover, a little preparation can make the process smoother, more comfortable, and even enjoyable. Here’s how to get ready:
1. Adjust Your Seat First
Before you start, adjust your seat so that there’s about 30 cm (12 inches) between your chest and the steering wheel. The steering wheel should ideally be level with your chin for the most comfortable sewing position.

2. Consider Opening the Driver’s Door
Whether your car is left-hand or right-hand drive, opening the driver’s door can make sewing easier since your elbow won’t constantly bump into the door.
However, if it’s too hot, too cold, or there are mosquitoes, it’s perfectly fine to keep the door closed—just make sure you’re comfortable and focused.
3. Play Some Gentle Music
Sewing your steering wheel cover takes patience. A bit of soft background music can help you stay relaxed and focused throughout the process.

4. Sew After a Meal
For beginners—especially if you’re sewing a more complex or tighter-fitting cover—the process may take up to two and a half hours. It’s best to start after eating so you can stay comfortable and avoid getting hungry mid-way.
